eCMR Italy–Austria: Codognotto and Scortrans Digitalize Road Transport
The Codognotto Group, in collaboration with the freight forwarder Scortrans S.r.l., has successfully completed the first cross-border transport between Italy and Austria using exclusively the electronic consignment note (eCMR), in compliance with the European eFTI Regulation (EU 2020/1056).
This initiative, carried out on May 22, 2025, along the Vicenza–Linz corridor, was verified by the Verona Traffic Police, confirming the full validity and efficiency of the digital process, with no reliance on paper documentation.
Innovation and Collaboration for Faster and Safer Logistics
The project is part of eFTI4EU, the European program dedicated to the digitization of transport documents. Thanks to the collaboration between businesses, institutions such as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, and technological partners including Circle Group and Accudire, it has been possible to integrate the eCMR into all stages of the supply chain, from sender to recipient, from document generation in the TMS to its on-road verification.
The adoption of digital signatures and real-time traceability demonstrates how a virtuous model of cooperation between businesses and institutions can drive innovation to simplify and enhance transparency across the entire logistics chain.
Concrete Benefits of Dematerialization in International Transport
Field experience has highlighted that transitioning from paper CMR to eCMR offers immediate benefits for both operators and authorities:
- Reduction in administrative time: Fully digital management eliminates the need for printing, signing, and physical storage, accelerating operations;
- Faster control procedures and enhanced security: Authorities can access documents in real time, reducing verification times and ensuring full compliance with regulations;
- Sustainability and process optimization: Eliminating paper helps reduce environmental impact and makes the supply chain more efficient.
The adoption of specific harmonized technical standards at the European level also allows this model to be extended to other international corridors, fostering a more efficient logistics network that is fully integrated within the European Union.
A replicable model for the future of digital logistics
This initial operational test demonstrates the feasibility of a completely digital system for international road transport. Codognotto and Scortrans have thus paved the way for a systematic application of the eCMR, laying the foundation for faster, more transparent, and sustainable logistics.
With projects like these, Codognotto reaffirms its commitment to innovating its processes and consistently supporting businesses, offering solutions that anticipate market needs and promote the transition towards a fully digital European logistics ecosystem.
