The Codognotto Group, a leading company in logistics and transportation services, and the GTS Group - one of Italy's foremost intermodal operators based in Bari, are pleased to announce a commercial agreement aimed at strengthening and expanding the intermodal offering in Italy and across Europe.

Both companies are renowned for their commitment to intermodality and their significant investments in this sector. Over the past two years, the Codognotto Group has invested more than 10 million euros in assets, including technologies related to digitalization and vehicles dedicated to combined road-rail transport. GTS, similarly, embarked on its intermodality journey in 2008 with the acquisition of GTS Rail, becoming one of the pioneering railway companies in Italy.

With this commercial agreement, the two companies will be able to combine resources and expertise in the intermodal sector, aiming to optimize transport loads and fully leverage the potential of each transportation mode.

The Potential of Intermodal Transport in Italy and Europe

Intermodal transport has emerged in recent years as a game changer in the Italian logistics sector, thanks to the effective combination of multiple transport modes such as road, rail, and sea.

Combined transport optimizes the strengths of each transport mode, ensuring faster transit times, reduced costs, and a better environmental impact for the client.

Despite the current challenges due to the lack of efficient railway infrastructure, companies continue to invest in intermodal transport, a crucial service for businesses and industries particularly focused on reducing CO2 emissions.

Agreement Details

In the past two years, we have invested over 10 million in digitalization, IT services, and vehicles dedicated to combined road-rail transport. The new Codognotto-GTS setup will enable us to offer our customers an even more diverse and competitive intermodal solution, enhancing service quality while reducing CO2 emissions. Just consider the economic value of the national freight transport market, over 300 billion. It is clear that to remain competitive, companies must keep pace with new technologies to improve not only the movement of goods but also to minimize pollution.

"With this new agreement, Gts expands its network to include Poland. There will also be new routes connecting southern and northern Italy, and from Piacenza to the rest of Europe, and vice versa. The train service from Piacenza to Gliwice is operated by our Gts Rail, with 8 weekly trips, and we are ready to increase this to 14. Each train carries 32 containers loaded with food products, beverages, furniture, and steel industry goods. Thanks to our other divisions, Gts provides a valuable contribution to both import and export: Gts Iberia, Gts Next, and the newly launched Seaway Agency, specializing in maritime transport. Despite the challenges posed by national infrastructure limitations, Marra concludes, we strongly believe that investing in intermodal transport is a winning solution for businesses and industries that prioritize environmental issues."

This new partnership will result in 50,000 tonnes of goods being shifted from road to rail, thereby reducing road traffic and removing approximately 2,000 trucks from the roads each year.
